Rock Hall Pet Lover Doubles Her Money

$10,000 Star Spangled Tripler Scratch-off Prize Doubled to $20,000

Rock Hall resident Deborah Edwards was still in shock after learning that she had not only won $10,000 on the Star Spangled Tripler scratch-off, but that the prize was really $20,000 due to the Maryland Lottery’s $2 Top Prize Doubler Promotion, running now through July 31.

The owner of six dogs decided to start playing scratch-offs about four months ago. When she got off from work on Friday, she stopped at the store to purchase some refreshments and her normal $20 worth of scratch-off tickets. “I bought three $2 scratch-offs, two $5 tickets and a $10 ticket,” said the lucky player.

The winner then went home to feed her dogs, watch some television, scratch her tickets and relax. Deborah typically scratches all the tickets and then goes back to check them with a magnifying glass. “My sight is not too good,” she said with a chuckle. To her surprise, on one of the tickets, she saw that she’d won $9000.  In wasn’t until the next day when she and several others checked her ticket again, that Deborah discovered she’d won an additional $1,000 – bringing her prize to $10,000.

When she took the ticket to the store to check it one last time, the cashier told her about the “Doubler” promotion. “I was in shock,” said the winner.

Deborah, who works part time at a seafood restaurant, said she’ll buy some treats for her pups, but is unsure of what she’ll do with the rest of her prize money. “Put it away, I guess,” she said with a smile.

The winning ticket was purchased at Rock Hall Liquors located at 21318 Rock Hall Road in Rock Hall.

Westminster Local Celebrates the 4th of July with a Star Spangled Win

$10,000 prize is doubled to $20,000 with the Lottery’s $2 Top Prize Doubler promotion

A Lottery winner’s eyes sparkled like fireworks last week when she realized her $10,000 Star Spangled Tripler top-prize winnings were going to be doubled. While stopping for ice cream during the recent heat wave, the federal government employee saw the patriotic scratch-off on display and bought two of them in honor of the July 4th holiday.  Her patriotism made her $20,000 richer.

The first ticket she scratched was not a winner, so she casually scratched the second and expected more of the same.  The mother-of-one said she was “completely shocked” when she realized that the symbols on her ticket indicated that she had won the top prize. “I  hadn’t won anything like this before so I wouldn’t allow myself to believe it at first.”  She immediately went home and asked her husband of 30 years to double-check the ticket.  After both agreeing that it looked like a winner, they went to a local retailer to scan it and make sure they weren’t seeing things.  With a huge grin, the lady behind the register said, “I think you have a winner!” The winner told Lottery officials, “We were nervous and excited all at the same time!”  She continued, “I thought I had heard about some kind of top-prize doubler but wanted to come in to your office before even thinking that was a possibility!”

The winner plans to put her prize towards her daughter’s law school education and a few small bills. The winning ticket was sold at Jiffy Mart at 74 West Main Street in Westminster.

Hurlock woman wins $20,000 playing Star Spangled Tripler scratch-off

Lutitia Fletcher was one of thousands of Marylanders thinking about the War of 1812 on Friday evening. Most were attending Sailabration in Baltimore’s Inner Harbor to commemorate the pivotal historic event.  Lutitia was scratching her Star Spangled Tripler scratch-off, honoring the famed conflict, when the patriotic $2 instant ticket yielded the first of its $10,000 top prizes. And, since it was purchased during the Maryland Lottery’s $2 Top Prize Doubler promotion, Lutitia walked away with $20,000. “I had no idea,” Lutitia told Lottery officials.  “I didn’t know until I got here that I’d won $20,000. I was happy with $10,000,” she said with a laugh.

Lutitia bought five of the Star Spangled Tripler tickets at around 8:30 pm on Friday, but didn’t scratch them until about 10:30 that evening. “I scratched number one, then number two, then number three,” said Lutitia. “Number four – still nothing. Then number five and it was ‘Whooooo!”

The 46-year-old spoke enthusiastically about her winning moment saying, “I was running through my house screaming!” Declaring this her biggest win to date, the scratch-off fan couldn’t contain her gratefulness. “Thank you Jesus,” she said. “This is a blessing.”

The mother-of-one, who was accompanied to Lottery Headquarters by her best friend, shared the news with her mother and father — who reaped the benefit of extra Father’s Day gifts.  Lutitia said her church will also benefit from her generosity, “I’m going to give God his 10%,” said the winner.  “The rest? I’m just going to enjoy it.”

The winning ticket was purchased at Universal Preston, located at 101 Maple Ave. in Preston.
