RCF Winners Spotlight: Season Tickets for Life winner still can’t believe it

Beth Bunch - Ravens Cash Fantasy

As the fourth ever winner of “Season Tickets for Life” from the Maryland Lottery’s Ravens Cash Fantasy, Beth Bunch of Dundalk will be attending Ravens games at M&T Bank Stadium for the next 20 years.

Much like Ravens fans who didn’t really believe their team had won the Super Bowl until they bought their new “Champions” gear, Bunch says her win still hasn’t really set in, and won’t until she has the physical evidence in hand.

“It’s pretty crazy,” Bunch said. “It still doesn’t feel real that I actually won season tickets for life. I don’t think it will feel real until I actually get the tickets in the mail.”

While Bunch doesn’t remember exactly when she entered her second-chance yards on the Lottery’s website, she does remember one remarkable detail – that she only entered three times in total for this prize. She was chosen from more than 136,000 entries for the prize.

While the fact that Bunch only entered three times may annoy some Ravens Cash Fantasy players who entered hundreds of times, it only reinforces the old adage that, “it only takes one to win.”

Bunch was at work by herself when she got the call that she had won, but she wasn’t jumping for joy just yet.

“I thought it was a random number so I didn’t answer it,” she recalled. “They left a voicemail and said where they were from. My mind was racing…I had no idea what I would have won since I had entered a few different drawings for various prizes.”

When Bunch finally heard what she had won, she – and everyone else – had a hard time believing her good fortune.

“It’s a big thing to win,” she said. “I called my Mom immediately and she called the rest of the family. I told a lot of my friends in person, and on Facebook, and they didn’t believe me at first.”

While Bunch usually goes to “a couple” Ravens games each year, she’s never had season tickets before, and she’s certainly never sat where she’ll be sitting for the next 20 years – in the club level.

“No, never,” Bunch explained when asked if she had ever sat in the club level. “I’m very excited to sit in the club level and see what it’s about!”

Bunch will be bringing her father – who she teamed up with in playing Ravens Cash Fantasy scratch-offs this year – along to most of the games, while also saving some tickets for other family members and friends.

Twenty years of football games is a lot of pigskin, but does Bunch think it’s possible to ever get sick of going to M&T Bank Stadium?

“Probably not,” she said. “It’s something I always get pretty excited about. I always like going to the games, so I’m pretty excited that I won this. “

Bunch, 26, is still trying to wrap her head around the whole thing.

“It still doesn’t feel real. It’s just a lot to think about. By the time [the prize ends in] 20 years, I’ll probably have kids and stuff. It’s crazy to think about.”

Maryland Lottery Awards Ravens Cash Fantasy Top Prizes: $1 Million Cash and “Season Tickets for Life*”

Reynolds and Bunch - Ravens Cash Fantasy

Beth Bunch and Marl Reynolds show off their big
Ravens Cash Fantasy second-chance prizes.

Two additional $25,000 drawings remain

No one would know the football season was over judging by the cheering, clapping and purple Ravens gear sported at Lottery headquarters today. The Maryland Lottery welcomed Mark Reynolds of Eldersburg and Beth Bunch of Dundalk as they claimed their ultimate Ravens Cash Fantasy prizes this morning. Both winners had been selected during the second-chance drawings held earlier in the month for $1 million and “Season Ticket for Life.”

Reynolds, who took home the $1 million prize, had been purchasing the $5 Ravens Cash Fantasy scratch-off tickets throughout the football season, but never thought he would be the person to walk away with one of the second-chance drawing prizes. “As soon as I found out I had won, I went out and bought $125 worth of Ravens gear! I still can’t believe it,” he said. He and wife Kathy told Lottery officials that they plan to use their winnings for their daughter’s college tuition and will put the rest away for retirement.

Bunch, who won the “Season Tickets for Life” prize, had only three entries in the drawing and was selected out of 136,816 entries. She said that while she has many friends who would like to go to games with her, she promised her promised her father Larry that they would go to the season opener this together.

More than 100 Lottery players have won a variety of second-chance prizes through this year’s Ravens Cash Fantasy contest including Ravens season tickets, trips with the team, gameday packages, cash prizes and more. For a complete list of winners, visit mdlottery.com/ravens.

There two additional $25,000 drawings that will take place on Thursday, February 28 and Thursday, March 28, 2013. The $5 scratch-off ticket still has two $250,000 instant top-prizes remaining and is available at the more than 4,300 Maryland Lottery retail locations across the state.

RCF Winners Spotlight: Winner looks back on first year as a millionaire

John Menzel - $1M Ravens Cash Fantasy

It’s been a year since John Menzel of Salisbury found out that he had won the $1 Million prize from the Maryland Lottery’s Ravens Cash Fantasy scratch-offs second-chance contest. Though he had trouble forming complete sentences at the time, his elation at winning was clear.

“Surreal, fantastic, blessed, unbelievable,” he was quoted as saying when he made the trip to the Lottery offices to find out what he had won.

Menzel also told Lottery officials that his eight (now nine) – year old twin daughters were only asking for one thing if their parents won the million dollars: a Ravens foam finger.

John Menzel - $1M Ravens Cash FantasyThe girls got their foam fingers and a lot more, as the Menzels took a family vacation to Hawaii, as well as making a trip up to Baltimore for the Ravens game against the Dallas Cowboys on October 13.

“That was the girls’ first Ravens game,” Menzel said. “They very much enjoyed themselves; they had a blast!

“We stayed downtown at the Inner Harbor at the Hyatt. That’s where the team stays [the night before a game], so we saw a lot of players the night before, and on the morning of the game as we walked across the Harbor to get breakfast. It was great.”

Though the Ravens emerged victorious, they did it in typical 2012 Ravens fashion, with the game going right down to the wire. Still, the Menzels had a wonderful time, sitting in the upper deck and enjoying the win with other fans.

“It was a nail-biter right down to the last second,” Menzel recalled. “But it didn’t really get that rowdy [in the stands]. It was a great time, a great experience.”

Aside from taking the vacation to Hawaii and coming to Baltimore to see a Ravens game, life hasn’t changed much for the Menzels. When they won their prize, John and his wife Lori said they planned on “resuming life as normal.” That’s just what they’ve done, as John continues to work and Lori is still teaching elementary school.

Menzel continued to play Ravens Cash Fantasy this year, though he wasn’t as lucky as he was the last time around.

“I was bummed I didn’t win the Season Tickets for Life,” Menzel lamented.

There’s still time to play Ravens Cash Fantasy scratch-offs. Though the grand prizes have been drawn, there are still two more chances to win a $25,000 prize. To enter, visit mdlottery.com/ravens.

RCF Winners Spotlight: Winner uses cash prize to expand home in hopes of adopting children

Kelly Straub - Ravens Cash Fantasy

Kelly smiles as she collects her $25,000 Ravens Cash Fantasy prize.

There’s obviously no “bad time” to win a prize from the Maryland Lottery.

However, sometimes Lady Luck shows up at the perfect moment.

That was the case for Kelly Straub of Stevensville, who won a $25,000 weekly prize by playing Ravens Cash Fantasy Scratch-offs.

For starters, Straub was just about to board a plane to Las Vegas when she found out that she had won. What better way to start a vacation to a place where “luck” is the number one commodity?

“I was actually on my way to Las Vegas and I got a call from my husband saying someone called from the Lottery,” Straub said. “I was getting on the plane at the time.”

As fate would have it, Lady Luck was in the mood to fly to Las Vegas as well.

“My luck continued [in Vegas],” Straub recalled. “I was there with my siblings for my niece’s 21st birthday and my two sisters came too. It was a girls’ weekend. I was the only one that won playing slots, and I bet on the Ravens [to beat the Patriots in the AFC Championship Game] and I won a little bit of money there too.

“It started with the Ravens Cash Fantasy notification and I just had a very lucky weekend. I probably exhausted all of my luck!”

However, Straub’s Ravens Cash Fantasy win came at the perfect time for another, more critical reason.

Just one day before Straub got the call from the Lottery telling her that she had won, she and her husband had made a huge decision.

“We had just, the day before, decided that we were going to do a room expansion on our house to accommodate a couple kids that we are adopting from foster care,” she explained. “And we were like ok, how are we going to pay for this? But we were going to do it anyway.”

The Straubs have been going through the adoption process for nearly a year. They hope that the improvements they are making to their home – the cost of which is being partially offset by their cash prize from the Maryland Lottery – will provide the good karma to bring them the children they desire.

“We’re just really excited because we’ve been waiting since September to be matched with some kids from foster care,” said Straub. “We then had this idea that, ‘if we build it, they will come.’

“It’s just a long waiting game, and we’re just like ‘ok, one of these days, we’ll get some kids, we’re ready!’ So we said, ‘let’s make the room bigger and maybe we can make it a little more comfortable for them.’ So that’s what we’re going to do with the money.

“I think [the expansion] will be better for the kids overall to have. We have one child already and he has his own room. I think it will be a really good thing…again, ‘if we build it, they will come!” So hopefully the ‘foster care gods’ decide to give us some children.”

While the Straubs continue to play the waiting game with their adoption process, Kelly says that her taste of winning has inspired her to continue to push her luck.

“I’ve bought more scratch offs in the time since I won, than I had been buying before,” she said. “Winning inspired me to play a little bit more.”

Hopefully, the new expansion to their home will result in an addition of another kind very soon for the Struabs – the pitter-patter of little feet.

“The win is really going to help,” exclaimed Straub. “We were super excited about it and it was just like, ‘OK, it was meant to be!’”
