Powerball Jackpot Increases Again to $600 Million

UPDATE: May 17, 2013

Highest Powerball Jackpot in Game’s History

It’s time to get those tickets, Marylanders – the Powerball jackpot has been raised yet again and this time it’s a record-breaker. Nationwide sales pushed Saturday night’s jackpot from $550 million to a record-breaking $600 million. Along with becoming the largest Powerball jackpot ever, it’s also the second-largest jackpot in United States history. The cash option is now $376.9 million.

The largest multi-state jackpot in U.S. history was the Mega Millions $656 million jackpot in March 2012, which produced three winning tickets. One of the winning tickets was claimed by three Maryland public school employees, who took home a $218.6 million portion of the record-breaking prize.

In addition to the ballooning Powerball jackpot, another multi-state jackpot game has also been on a roll. Tonight’s Mega Millions drawing is worth $190 million.

Powerball Jackpot Keeps on Rolling

Climbs to $270 million with $175.8 million cash option for Saturday’s drawing

Could this be yet another huge Powerball jackpot in the making? It’s been a little over a month since the $338 million jackpot was claimed in New Jersey, but the Powerball jackpot is quickly gaining steam after last night’s drawing failed to produce a top-tier winner. The jackpot has rolled to $270 million with a $175.8 million cash option.

According to the Lottery’s Director of Communications Carole Everett, once the jackpot surpasses the $200 million mark, people really begin to get excited. “The buzz surrounding jackpots when they reach this level spurs people into action,” Everett said. This Powerball jackpot has been rolling since April 3.

Powerball drawings can be seen on Wednesday and Saturday evenings at 11:22 p.m. on WBAL-TV, Channel 11. The drawings are later rebroadcast on Maryland Public Television. The multi-state game is sold in 45 states and jurisdictions. California is the most recent lottery to begin offering the game.

Unlucky with Powerball, Hagerstown Couple Find Luck with Scratch-off

Win $30,000 with change from Powerball purchase

LuckLast weekend, when the Powerball jackpot had a $320 million jackpot, Lottery players were looking for luck wherever they could find it. For a couple of Hagerstown residents, their luck took another path, leading them to a $30,000 top prize with the Lottery’s $3 Luck scratch-off.

The couple was driving to West Virginia for a day at the races when the dump truck driver suggested to his wife that they pick up a Powerball ticket before that evening’s big drawing. When they stopped, she used a $10 bill to purchase $6 worth of Powerball, spending the remaining few dollars on a couple of scratch-offs.

The 55-year-old began to scratch her tickets when they continued their trip, but a few miles down the road she couldn’t believe her eyes. One of her numbers matched the $30,000 prize. “My heart was jumping out – going ‘Bub-bub-ba-bub’,” she said.

The couple stopped again, just a few miles from where they purchased it, to check the ticket. “The clerk was excited and the people in the store just stopped when she said that she couldn’t cash the ticket because the prize was too big,” said the lucky lady.

The winners plan to use their winnings to pay bills and become debt free. The ability to pay those debts is a thrill. “We always work, pay bills and keep on going. This is the most we’ve ever won,” said her husband.

The winning ticket was purchased at the Sheetz convenience store located at 17550 Virginia Avenue in Hagerstown.

Westminster Couple Claims $1 Million Powerball Prize

A Westminster family visited Lottery Headquarters today, almost a week after winning a $1 million second-tier Powerball prize from last Saturday’s drawing.  The husband and wife team purchased their big winner while out bowling with friends. The duo didn’t realize their  great windfall until well after the drawing.

On Monday the winner’s sister called to ask if she had purchased any Powerball tickets while they had been out the past weekend. “My sister called me at work because the bowling alley had sold a $1 million winner,” reported the woman. “I had the ticket with me so she read off the numbers.”

The heating company employee could barely contain her glee as her sister read off the numbers on her ticket. “My co-worker didn’t know what was going on, I just got so excited – right there in the office.  I couldn’t believe it,” she said.

The woman had to leave work to show her husband the ticket after he refused to believe her on the phone. Looking back, the man, who works for a construction company, had to laugh at the situation. “We went shopping with a $1 million ticket in our wallet last week, worried about how much we were going to spend.”

For now the couple plans to use their winnings to grow their retirement fund and to help with their high school-aged son’s college fund. Their good fortune found them at the Thunderhead Bowl & Grill at 4337 Old Taneytown Road in Taneytown.

Claims second-tier Powerball prize

While there, he checked his tickets from last week, including a Powerball ticket from Saturday night’s drawing. “I immediately asked the cashier what that meant,” the retiree told Lottery officials. “She told me that she didn’t know how much I won, but it was probably pretty big.”

He then called his friend and asked her to find out how much his ticket was worth. He was in shock when he found out it was a $1 million win. The lucky winner, who plays the same numbers for every drawing, says he will continue playing. As of now, the new millionaire plans to put the money in the bank.
