Powerball Jackpot Keeps on Rolling

Climbs to $270 million with $175.8 million cash option for Saturday’s drawing

Could this be yet another huge Powerball jackpot in the making? It’s been a little over a month since the $338 million jackpot was claimed in New Jersey, but the Powerball jackpot is quickly gaining steam after last night’s drawing failed to produce a top-tier winner. The jackpot has rolled to $270 million with a $175.8 million cash option.

According to the Lottery’s Director of Communications Carole Everett, once the jackpot surpasses the $200 million mark, people really begin to get excited. “The buzz surrounding jackpots when they reach this level spurs people into action,” Everett said. This Powerball jackpot has been rolling since April 3.

Powerball drawings can be seen on Wednesday and Saturday evenings at 11:22 p.m. on WBAL-TV, Channel 11. The drawings are later rebroadcast on Maryland Public Television. The multi-state game is sold in 45 states and jurisdictions. California is the most recent lottery to begin offering the game.

Maryland Lottery Celebrates 40th Anniversary with Exhibit at the Baltimore Museum of Industry

Maryland Lottery 40th Anniversary

“40 Years/40 Stories” details Lottery’s history

The year was 1973. Polyester pants were in fashion, disco music pulsed across the nation, and the Maryland Lottery opened its doors for the very first time. Now, 40 years later, the Maryland Lottery is celebrating its ruby anniversary with a featured exhibit, “40 Year/40 Stories,” at the Baltimore Museum of Industry (BMI). The multi-faceted exhibit, which opens to the public on March 3, will provide visitors with an in-depth look at the Maryland Lottery’s economic and social role in the state’s history and will feature historic newspaper articles, unique game components, iconic scratch-off tickets, vintage print and commercial advertising and an eclectic array of photographs and visuals that span 40 years.

“We spent almost a year doing research in preparation for the exhibit,” said Maryland Lottery Director of Communications Carole Everett. “The Maryland Lottery is a multi-dimensional organization that is far more complex than most people realize.  We believe the public will find ‘40 Years/40 Stories’ thoroughly enjoyable and interesting.”

The exhibit will be open to attendees of the BMI’s annual Bull and Oyster Roast fundraiser on Saturday, March 2, 2013. The Lottery will also announce the first set of winners from the 40 Rubies scratch-off second-chance contest and broadcast the Pick 3/Pick 4 drawing live from the museum during the event on partner station WBAL-TV at 7:57 p.m.

The Maryland Lottery is encouraging its players to share in the anniversary celebration on Twitter by sharing their favorite Lottery moments using the hashtag #mdlottery40.

“40 Years/40 Stories” was created in collaboration with independent design consultant Jeremy Hoffman.  Hoffman, a Baltimore native and MICA graduate, specializes in museum and environmental projects.  The exhibit, which is expected to run through the fall, will be open to the public during regular museum hours, which are Tuesday through Sunday from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. For more information about the BMI or the exhibit, click here.

Notable Second-and-Third-Tier Powerball Prizes

Sizeable payouts remain for last week’s big Powerball drawing

While most Maryland Powerball players had their sights set on the $587.5 million jackpot last week, eleven tickets bought in the state won significant second and third-tier prizes. These Powerball players may not be Maryland’s newest multi-millionaires, but they are certainly several thousand dollars richer.

Notably, ten Marylanders won the third-tier $10,000 prize during last week’s huge Powerball drawing. Maryland’s second-tier winner, Almerta Williams from Edgewood, took home $2 million last week after she matched five out of the six numbers drawn and doubled her prize by choosing the Power Play option.

New or infrequent players often try their luck when the jackpot reaches such a seemingly insurmountable sum, but many are not aware of the other prize levels available. “It’s important for players to check their tickets before throwing them away,” said Maryland Lottery Director of Communications Carole Everett. “There are plenty of other prizes beside the jackpot which are still substantial.”

The winning third-tier tickets purchased in Maryland came from Baltimore City, Baltimore, Calvert, Montgomery, Prince George’s, St. Mary’s and Washington counties. Three tickets; one from Baltimore City, Montgomery and Prince George’s counties have yet to be claimed by the ticket holders. Players have 182 days from the drawing date to redeem their prizes.  See below for retailers who sold third-tier-winning tickets for the 11/29/2012 drawing:

Pick 3 Pays Off Big for Players

Triples Break the Bank Last Night

Lottery officials are reporting that last night’s Pick 3 results of 7-7-7 broke the bank – and then some.  The better-than $1.6 million prize payout was more than four times the amount wagered by players on the drawing.

“Triples and quadruples are always popular with our players,” said Carole Everett, the Lottery’s Director of Communications.  “Whenever they’re drawn we expect significant payouts.”  Last night’s Pick 3 marks the third time this year for triples.  The last occurrence was June 13th when 2-2-2 was drawn.

Triples Break the Bank Last Night

According to Lottery officials, last night’s Pick 3 results of 2-2-2 broke the bank. The better-than $2.6 million prize payout was more than six times the amount wagered by players on the drawing. A happy night, indeed, for the holders of the 10,817 Pick 3 tickets who correctly matched the winning combination.

“Triples and quadruples have always been popular with our players,” said Carole Everett, the Lottery’s Director of Communications. “We know that whenever they come up, we’re in line for a significant payout.” Wednesday evening’s Pick 3 marks the second time this year for triples. The last occurrence was on April 25 when 0-0-0 was drawn.
