Roadside Rescue Leads to $50,000 Win

Mary Groff - Amazing 8s

The Groffs celebrate their “Amazing” Win.

Top-Tier Prize won on Amazing 8s Scratch-off

A Dundalk couple was surprised to discover that a strange set of circumstances resulted in a $50,000 windfall.  “We got a call from one of our daughters, saying that she had run out of gas,” said Mary Groff.  “When my husband went to help her, she showed her appreciation in Lottery tickets.” While out performing roadside assistance Dean Groff also stopped to purchase a few tickets himself.

Later, while watching Jeopardy, Mary scratched her tickets and discovered her top-tier winner. When the 67-year-old homemaker told her husband the news, he just looked at her in disbelief. “I think I only slept two hours that night,” said Mary.

While there are many possible plans for the prize winnings, Mary was sure of just one. “We’re on retirement with a steelworker’s pension, so we don’t waste a lot of money,” she said. “I’ve been pinching and saving to get a new kitchen floor. I’m getting it now!”

The winning ticket was purchased at George’s Liquors, located at 2101 Merritt Blvd. in Dundalk.

Cambridge Mechanic Almost Throws Away $50,000 Fortune

Cambridge resident Donyere Bowens celebrates his $50,000 Amazing 8’s win.

$50,000 Amazing 8’s Scratch-off Saved from Trash

If not for a sudden desire for a cold cut sub, Donyere Bowens of Cambridge might never have stopped in at a Lottery retailer for lunch and a scratch-off ticket.  And, if not for an attentive cashier who stopped him from throwing that ticket away, he might never have made it to Lottery headquarters to claim his $50,000 prize.

Donyere, an unemployed mechanic, decided to get a $5 Amazing 8’s instant ticket while he waited for his sandwich.  “I’ve had pretty good luck with $5 tickets in the past,” he told officials.  “I scratched my game and thought I’d struck out.  I turned to look for a trashcan when the guy behind the counter stopped me.”  A closer examination revealed the $50,000 win.  “When he told me it was a big winner I was sure he was wrong.  I looked closer and saw that it was good for $50,000 – total shock, I could not believe it.”

Mr. Bowens considers the timing of his Amazing 8’s win a blessing.  “Being out of work is tough.  This will make life a little easier.  Most importantly, I’ll be able to give my wife and kids the Christmas they deserve.”  The lucky store with the fortune-saving staff is U-5 Foods, 3850 Smithville Road in Federalsburg.

Michael Wehnert, Jr. worked the Thanksgiving holiday all day and worked the weekend too. But he isn’t complaining. It was on one of his breaks, that the dedicated Wings to Go employee purchased his winning $50,000 Amazing 8s scratch-off ticket.

“A group of employees takes our tips and buys scratch-offs next door at Honey Bee Liquors,” said Michael. “Sometimes the owner of Wings to Go and I pitch in together to get Powerball and Mega Million tickets too.

On Sunday, Michael purchased six $5 scratch-offs. He gave two of the tickets he purchased away and headed home with his remaining four. As luck would have it the 24-year-old had held onto the winner. He discovered his good fortune when he scratched his Amazing 8s ticket at home. “I was so surprised,” said Michael. “I checked the ticket ten times then went back to the Honey Bee Liquor Store and had the clerk check it too.” Once confirmed Michael texted his roommate, Rhea Duke, to tell her the good news.

The lucky winner has no immediate plans for his new found riches. The winning ticket was purchased at Honey Bee Liquors, located at 7509 Ritchie Hwy. in Glen Burnie.

Laurel Man Stunned By $50,000 Win

Joseph Waters, Jr. - Amazing 8s

Joseph Waters, Jr. from Laurel celebrates his 50,000 Amazing 8s win!

Wins Amazing 8s Scratch-off Top Prize

Taking his scratch-offs home from the store before playing is the regular routine for Joseph Waters, Jr. of Laurel, something he does just about every day. So, up to the point of scratching his Amazing 8s game, his Friday morning had been just as normal and uneventful as he expected. The rest of his Friday and his weekend, though, were quite the opposite.

When he saw the matching numbers and the $50,000 amount, he was shocked. “This kind of thing just doesn’t happen to me,” he explained to Lottery officials. He took the ticket upstairs to his wife to make sure he was seeing what he thought he was seeing. Joe’s wife reported that he looked calm, like nothing was amiss. It was only when she saw the Amazing 8s ticket and realized what had just happened to them that she warned her husband to stay calm. “Joe has a pacemaker, you see.” The couple had a relaxing weekend, but were anxious to get to Lottery Headquarters Monday morning to claim their prize. “I was up, dressed and ready to go super early this morning,” Joe joked.

Joe plans to use his winnings to pay bills and repair his truck.

The winning Amazing 8s ticket was purchased from the Shell service station at 9280 All Saints Road in Laurel.

Elkridge Man Amazed to be $50,000 Richer

Micheal Reynolds - Amazing 8s

Amazing win for Elkridge man.

Wins Amazing 8s Scratch-off Top Prize

With extra time on his hands this past Friday, Micheal Reynolds played a few Lottery scratch-offs he had in his pocket and ended up finding the ticket that he’d been dreaming about for years.  There he was, alone in his car waiting for his granddaughter’s school bus to drop her off, when Lottery luck found him.  The Amazing 8s scratch-off ticket that he’d bought earlier that morning had delivered a $50,000 win.

Micheal, a builder of research equipment, didn’t believe it at first.  He’d played the game before, he knew how it worked, but could not believe what he was seeing.  “I was just stunned,” he told officials.  He somehow kept the news from his granddaughter and, after bringing her home, went to his wife’s store to tell her.  “She refused to believe it,” said Micheal, “I had to show her the winning ticket before she’d take me seriously.”

The winning Amazing 8s ticket was purchased from an instant ticket vending machine at the Elkridge Exxon station, 7311 Washington Blvd.  The winner plans to use his winnings on some home repair projects.

Amazing Luck Makes Parkville Man $50,000 Richer

Bill Pilkerton Claims Amazing 8s Top Prize

On Tuesday evening, Parkville resident Bill Pilkerton and his wife Joanne went out for their usual date night: half-priced burgers at the Valley View Inn. The couple, who was simply looking forward to a casual night out, had no idea they would leave one of their favorite restaurants with an extra $50,000.

After finishing their meal and enjoying a few drinks, Pilkerton collected his winnings from an earlier Bonus Match 5 game and decided to buy a few scratch-off tickets from the restaurant’s instant ticket vending machine. “I’d never played the Amazing 8s ticket and hadn’t been interested in it before,” the H&S Bakery sales representative explained, “I just did it on a whim.” He scratched the ticket while still at the restaurant and immediately showed Joanne, who assumed her husband was playing a joke on her.

The Pilkertons have been married for over 23 years and have two sons. Bubba, their 19 year-old son accompanied the excited couple to Lottery headquarters. Bill plans to use the money for a much-needed new car for his wife and an older “fixer-upper” muscle car for himself. The rest of his winnings will be used for bills.

The winning Amazing 8s ticket was purchased from the instant ticket vending machine at the Valley View Inn located at 8712 Satyr Hill Rd in Parkville.
