Windsor Mill Man Makes a $1 Million Trip to the Landfill

Kevin Watkins - Powerball

Kevin Watkins of Windsor Mill won the $1 million Powerball second-tier
prize with a ticket purchased after a trip to the county landfill.

Claims Outstanding Second-Tier Powerball Prize

The last time Kevin Watkins won a notable prize playing the Maryland Lottery, neon Spandex and fanny packs were in style. For years, he kept playing the jackpot games, hoping to top his $1,200 win. The 56-year-old finally beat his previous win with a Powerball ticket paid out to the tune of $1 million.

Kevin was heading back from the county landfill when he decided to pull over and stop at a Royal Farms to get an ICEE. While waiting in line to check out, the state employee decided to buy a Powerball ticket with five numbers. Luck would have it that the last row of numbers on the Windsor Mill man’s ticket was a big winner.

“I checked my tickets at another store a couple of days later and saw that I had to come down to Lottery headquarters,” he said.

After checking with the clerk at the store, Kevin went home to look the numbers up on the Lottery’s website. “My wife was with me when I found out the ticket was worth $1 million. She just kept telling me that I was a little too calm for having won so much.”

Although Kevin’s ticket was only one number shy of winning the Powerball jackpot last month, he’s not complaining. “It would’ve been nice to be able to retire,” he admitted. “I probably would’ve catered lunch at work and put in my two weeks’ notice, but this win is still very nice.”

The couple has been married eight years. They plan to pay a few bills and put the rest toward their retirement fund. “My wife and I have a date night every Friday and we make a point of going out for breakfast on Saturday mornings. I’m sure we’ll put a little of the money toward that as well,” Kevin said.

He bought the lucky ticket at Royal Farms #014 located at 4384 Hollins Ferry Road in Baltimore.

Mechanicsville Couple Wins $1 Million Powerball Prize

Lucky husband and wife team take home second-tier prize

Late last Wednesday evening, a Mechanicsville couple had the shock of a lifetime when they realized they were Maryland’s newest millionaires. The husband had checked the numbers on the Maryland Lottery’s website soon after the Powerball drawing aired and was stunned to see his ticket’s numbers glaring back at him. He knew immediately that his ticket, which matched all five white balls and lacked only the Powerball number, was worth $1 million.

The 54-year-old quickly woke up his wife to tell her the fantastic news. “I didn’t even have to check the ticket twice,” the wife said, smiling. They kept the ticket in a safe at their home after realizing how much it was worth. The happy couple later told their daughter and son about the win, opting to keep the good news within the immediate family.

The two self-employed winners plan to invest half of the money, pay off their bills and buy a new car. Despite the wonderful windfall, they plan to continue trying their Lottery luck.

“We spend a few dollars a day on tickets,” the man said. “With an exciting win like this, I can’t imagine we would stop playing now!”

The lucky Powerball ticket was purchased at Ken Mar Liquors at 1525 Solomons Island Road in Prince Frederick.

$1 Million Powerball Win “Lights Up” Electrician

Virginia Man Thrilled, Still Shocked by Second-Tier Prize

He’s a Powerball veteran with tickets for just about every drawing and who knows almost everything about the game, but when his eyes told him that his ticket correctly matched five of the six winning numbers recently, his mind when blank. The Northern Virginia player simply could not believe that he’d won a $1 million prize.

“It wasn’t until I got here and talked to the people at the Lottery office that I really believed I had won,” the 36-year-old electrician told officials. “I knew it was real after looking at the winning numbers a week or so ago, but somehow I just didn’t accept it.”

The Powerball drawing that produced the win occurred back on May 4. When officials asked why the winner had waited three weeks to claim his $1 million, he said, “I wanted to talk to some people before I came in, to get some advice about the process.”

The Powerball fan plans to take a vacation in the near future to get some quiet time to ponder just what he’ll do with is winnings. “I have some ideas, but I want to make sure I do it the right way.” While he doesn’t plan to stop working and may go back to school, he wants to focus considerable attention on programs that create opportunities for the less fortunate to improve their lives.

Powerball luck found this winner at East Liquors, 6367 Livingston Road in Oxon Hill. As he left Lottery headquarters, he still seemed to not grasp his good fortune. “How can this be happening to me? How can I be this blessed?”

The largest multi-state jackpot in U.S. history was the Mega Millions $656 million jackpot in March 2012, which produced three winning tickets. One of the winning tickets was claimed by three Maryland public school employees, who took home a $218.6 million portion of the record-breaking prize.

Powerball Jackpot Keeps on Rolling

Climbs to $270 million with $175.8 million cash option for Saturday’s drawing

Could this be yet another huge Powerball jackpot in the making? It’s been a little over a month since the $338 million jackpot was claimed in New Jersey, but the Powerball jackpot is quickly gaining steam after last night’s drawing failed to produce a top-tier winner. The jackpot has rolled to $270 million with a $175.8 million cash option.

According to the Lottery’s Director of Communications Carole Everett, once the jackpot surpasses the $200 million mark, people really begin to get excited. “The buzz surrounding jackpots when they reach this level spurs people into action,” Everett said. This Powerball jackpot has been rolling since April 3.

Westminster Couple Claims $1 Million Powerball Prize

A Westminster family visited Lottery Headquarters today, almost a week after winning a $1 million second-tier Powerball prize from last Saturday’s drawing.  The husband and wife team purchased their big winner while out bowling with friends. The duo didn’t realize their  great windfall until well after the drawing.

On Monday the winner’s sister called to ask if she had purchased any Powerball tickets while they had been out the past weekend. “My sister called me at work because the bowling alley had sold a $1 million winner,” reported the woman. “I had the ticket with me so she read off the numbers.”

The heating company employee could barely contain her glee as her sister read off the numbers on her ticket. “My co-worker didn’t know what was going on, I just got so excited – right there in the office.  I couldn’t believe it,” she said.

The woman had to leave work to show her husband the ticket after he refused to believe her on the phone. Looking back, the man, who works for a construction company, had to laugh at the situation. “We went shopping with a $1 million ticket in our wallet last week, worried about how much we were going to spend.”

For now the couple plans to use their winnings to grow their retirement fund and to help with their high school-aged son’s college fund. Their good fortune found them at the Thunderhead Bowl & Grill at 4337 Old Taneytown Road in Taneytown.

A 68-year-old Dundalk man followed his regular routine this past Sunday morning, heading to the local Giant store to purchase his Lottery tickets for the upcoming week. While there, he checked his tickets from last week, including a Powerball ticket from Saturday night’s drawing. While scanning that ticket, a message came across the screen that the ticket needed to be claimed at Lottery headquarters.

“I immediately asked the cashier what that meant,” the retiree told Lottery officials. “She told me that she didn’t know how much I won, but it was probably pretty big.”

He then called his friend and asked her to find out how much his ticket was worth. He was in shock when he found out it was a $1 million win. The lucky winner, who plays the same numbers for every drawing, says he will continue playing. As of now, the new millionaire plans to put the money in the bank.

The winning ticket was purchased at Giant #363, located at 1400 Merritt Blvd. in Dundalk. Another second-tier $1 million ticket from that same drawing remains unclaimed. The unclaimed ticket was purchased at Thunderhead Bowl and Grill in Taneytown. That winner has 182 to days to claim the prize.
