$250,000 Mega Millions Ticket Claimed by Silver Spring Couple

It only took four days for a Silver Spring couple to claim their Mega Millions second-tier prize. The pair brought the winning ticket to Lottery headquarters on Tuesday ready to walk away with their $250,000 prize from last Friday’s Mega Millions drawing.

The couple has been playing the Lottery the same way for years. The 28-year-old wife always gives her husband money and asks him to pick up their Lottery tickets for the week. Then, once the drawings occur, they return to the store to check their tickets.

After scanning this ticket several times, they thought that the store’s scanner was broken. Every time they scanned the ticket a message appears instructing them to take their ticket to Lottery headquarters. “I had to ask the clerk if his machine was broken,” said the lucky man. “It just kept showing the same message.”

Perplexed, the store clerk took the ticket and scanned it himself. Then, to the couple surprise, the clerk informed the couple of their $250,000 windfall. They were still skeptical and looked up the winning numbers. Sure enough, they matched five numbers, only missing the Mega Ball.

The couple is planning a vacation to the Dominican Republic to celebrate their win. They also plan on paying off bills and starting an additional college fund for their 9-year-old son.

The lucky ticket was purchased from Columbia Road Exxon located at 12601 Old Columbia Pike in Silver Spring.

Time to check those tickets, Marylanders! This past weekend, more than 42,000 Powerball and Mega Millions players in Maryland added some extra money to their wallets, including a $1 million Powerball and a $250,000 Mega Millions winner. The $1 million winning second-tier Powerball ticket was sold at East Liquors at 6367-71 Livingston Rd. in Oxon Hill. After the jackpot failed to produce a jackpot winner, Wednesday’s drawing is now worth $222 million with a 144.5 million cash option.

The $250,000 winning second-tier Mega Millions ticket from Friday night’s drawing was sold at the Columbia Road Exxon at 12601 Old Columbia Pike in Silver Spring. The Mega Millions jackpot rolled again, making tomorrow night’s drawing worth $139 million with a cash option of $104.8 million.

The second-tier winners have 182 days to claim the prize and must come in person to the Lottery’s Claims Center, located at 1800 Washington Blvd. in Baltimore.

A Quick Pick Leads to Quick Cash

Gaithersburg Man Wins 250,000 Mega Millions Prize

A 35-year-old man won a Mega Millions second-tier prize after deciding change up his routine and not play his regular numbers. Instead, he made the decision to purchase a Quick Pick ticket. That split-second decision quickly turned into a $250,000 Mega Millions win.

The Gaithersburg man was stunned when his ticket showed five-out-of-six winning numbers when he checked his numbers at the store the next day. “I immediately started to jump and scream after realizing I actually had a winning ticket” said the lucky winner. As people stood and watched the man celebrate his win, the store owner advised the man to go home to think about what he was going to do with his new fortune.

After calling his sister to share the news of the big win, the man was faced with the task of where to hide the ticket until he could bring it in to Lottery headquarters. He first tried putting the ticket inside of a thick book, but later decided it wasn’t a safe place as he could easily lose it between the pages. He then took the lucky ticket and hid it in his tool box. The ticket eventually ended up inside of a new oil filter.

He plans to use the money to pay off bills and start college funds for his nephews and nieces. The winning ticket was purchased at 7-11 located at 15821 Frederick Road in Rockville.

Lucky Playslip Leads to Big Mega Millions Win

Howard County woman claims $250,000 second-tier prize

An Ellicott City woman had been using the same wrinkled Mega Millions playslip for years, firmly believing it would one day lead her to a big prize. For years her husband told her that she should just fill out a new payslip – one that was less crinkled and worn. He is happy that she never listened to him since that Mega Millions playslip finally paid off to the tune of $250,000.

When the woman checked her ticket at the store, she thought the scanner was broken and had to ask the store clerk for a printout of the winning numbers. “I was so stunned that I just stared at the ticket and said words that I probably shouldn’t repeat,” the 59-year-old said laughing.

Immediately, the woman rushed back home to share the news with her husband. “At first I thought something was wrong,” her recently retired husband told Lottery officials. “It was pretty early in the morning, so I thought she had received some bad news about a family member who had been sick.”

Instead of delivering bad news, his wife showed him the winning ticket and placed her lucky playslip in a plastic bag to keep it safe. The couple has yet to share their big news with anyone, including their own family, but plans to help their daughter and two college-aged grandchildren financially. In addition helping their family, the couple plans to move into a senior center. The rest if the winnings will go straight into their retirement fund. The winner purchased her ticket at the High’s convenience store located at 64 Frederick Rd. in Ellicott City.

Mega Millions Megaplier Win for Baltimore Grandmother

Wins $30,000 using her grandchildren’s birthdays

Matching four Mega Millions numbers and the Mega Ball typically results in a $10,000 win. A lucky Baltimore woman was able to triple her winnings and take home $30,000 thanks to the Mega Millions Megaplier® option she purchased for an extra dollar.

The woman, who always uses her grandchildren’s birthdays, was completely stunned when she called the Lottery’s Winning Numbers line the day after the drawing. As the recording listed off the numbers, the grandmother was in complete disbelief as she heard five of her numbers repeated. “I wrote down the winning numbers and compared my ticket a few times before I realized that I won something,” she said. “I couldn’t believe it.”

The 78-year-old woman immediately called her daughter to share the good news and then stored the ticket in a safe place until she could claim it. “I kept the ticket in some old pantyhose cardboard packaging,” she told Lottery officials.

The woman plans to share some of the money with her grandchildren and daughter since their birthdays were the reason for her good fortune. In addition to treating her family, the generous grandmother wants to contribute some of her winnings to her church. The winning ticket was purchased at Herling’s Grocery Basket, located at 400 W Lexington St. in Baltimore.

Silver Spring Man Employs Native System, Wins $250,000

Wins second-tier Mega Millions Prize

Sometimes all it takes is a little bit of faith for incredible things to happen. An avid Maryland Lottery player in Silver Spring knew his time had finally come when he learned that he was the holder of a $250,000 second-tier Mega Millions ticket.

Everything began to fall into place for the lucky man when he called the Lottery’s winning numbers line to see if his Mega Millions ticket for March 12th was worth anything. “I listened to the numbers on the phone, and thought that they sounded familiar,” said the winner, who chose his numbers with the help of family.

As a native of Cameroon, the man instilled his confidence in the “Sou-Sou” concept that his native West African brethren believe in, where everyone will regularly pool money together and have a random Lottery drawing. As a result, the winner is a very confident Lottery player whose ultimate goal is to win a big jackpot.

The winner, who is married with three children, plans to purchase a new home with his big winnings, preferably in a location close to his three jobs. He also plans to save some of the money for the future. The winning ticket was purchased at the Woodmor Supermarket on Colesville Road in Silver Spring.

Routine Day Is Anything But Ordinary

Montgomery County woman wins $250,000 Mega Millions second-tier prize

A 69-year-old Montgomery County woman routinely visits her daughter in Germantown. While in town last month, she stopped to buy Mega Millions tickets from her favorite supermarket in the area. The following day she learned that there was a $250,000 second-tier winner ticket sold at the store while out running errands and raced back to her daughter’s home to check her tickets. Low and behold, her ticket was the winner.

The woman, who was born in Venezuela, said, “I was just so shocked after I checked my ticket and realized that I had won. I didn’t believe it at first. Once I knew it was true, I started jumping up and down.”

The lucky winner, who does event planning with her daughter, told Lottery officials that she always uses the quick pick when playing Mega Millions. Her winning numbers for Tuesday, January 15 were 01-06-12-19-41. She was one number shy of hitting the jackpot.

Delayed Win Gives Silver Spring Man a “Second Chance”

Victor Serrano - Mega Millions

Victor Serrano of Silver Spring shows off his big win.

Wins $250,000 Mega Millions Prize

Victor Serrano’s Mega Millions ticket had been tucked inside his wallet for over a month when his father offered to check it at the store. When Serrano’s father returned, he told his son that he should probably have the ticket checked again due to an odd message that appeared on the scanner at the store. When the Silver Spring native went back the next day he saw that the forgotten ticket was actually worth $250,000.

The 22-year-old came into Lottery headquarters with a friend, eager to claim his winnings. The man, who works in auto collision repair, sees his huge win as a great opportunity to change his life. “This is a chance for me to have a new start,” he said. “It’s truly a blessing.”

Serrano, who had to take off work in order to claim his prize, said few people thought a win like this was possible. “I’ve told some close friends, but none of them really believe me,” he said laughing. “I’m sure they’ll believe me when I put my picture online with me holding the giant check!”

The modest 22-year-old said he plans on making a large payment on his mother’s home and wants to save the rest. “I’m not going to waste this money. As tempting as it is, I just can’t do that with this win,” he said. The winning ticket was sold at 7-11 #32975 at 9651 Washington Boulevard in Laurel.

A December to Remember for Newlyweds [VIDEO]

Owings Mills Couple Wins $250,000 Mega Millions Prize

This past December proved to be a whirlwind month for Debra Opper, a 51-year-old help desk associate who works for the Social Security Administration in Baltimore. Not only did she marry the love of her life, Hassan Manafikhalesi, but she also won a $250,000 second-tier Mega Millions prize from the December 28th’s drawing.

“I’m still in shock,” she said. “I purchased my ticket on Christmas Eve and went to midnight mass,” she said. “But I fell and hit my head that night, ended up getting eight stitches and forgot all about the ticket.” Almost one week later, Debra remembered. “When I  stopped by the store,  the clerk told me there was a big winning ticket sold there and that’s when I pulled out my Mega Millions tickets to see if I had won.”  Debra, a regular customer, was elated to learn that she was, in fact, the winner.

Debra and her mom regularly played the Lottery together.  “We’d take a few bucks each week and play a variety of Lottery games, hoping we’d strike it rich,” she said. “Sadly, my mom passed away this past November.” She believes her late mother had something to do with her win. “My win came almost exactly a month after she passed away. It makes me smile to think that she had a hand in that.”

“We are very excited that Debby won,” said Rocco, manager of the One Stop Convenience in Reisterstown where the winning ticket was sold.  “She’s been coming in the store for years and is such a sweet, deserving lady.”  For selling the winning ticket, the retailer  will receive a $1,000 commission.

The newlyweds said that they plan to use some of the money to pay bills, buy cars for Debby’s twin daughters, help Hassan start a taxi service and take a long-awaited honeymoon cruise.
