Maryland Lottery and Baltimore Ravens Continue Partnership

Board of Public Works approves contract

The Maryland Lottery and Gaming Control Agency (MLGCA) and the Baltimore Ravens have joined forces for the fifth year in a row. The Board of Public Works yesterday approved the contract, which will include the Ravens Champions $2 scratch-off ticket. The contract gives the Lottery the rights to use the Ravens logo, marks and experiential prizes.

As in previous years, Lottery players will have the chance to win cash and experiential Ravens’ prizes through the scratch-off and other Ravens-themed promotions. The Lottery will give away prizes including season tickets for life, season tickets for 2014, an away trip with the team, game-day packages and more.

“We look forward to continuing a successful partnership with the Super Bowl champion Baltimore Ravens,” said Stephen Martino, director of the MLGCA. “Ravens-themed promotions have always been popular with our players.”

The Champions scratch-off will launch by the end of July. The ticket will be sold at every Baltimore Ravens home game and at the more than 4,400 Lottery retail locations across the state.

Maryland Lottery and Gaming Control Agency and Maryland Attorney General’s Office Warn Citizens about Lottery Scams

Agencies urge residents to protect themselves

In a joint effort, the Maryland Lottery and Gaming Control Agency and Maryland Attorney General’s Office (OAG) are urging state residents to heed warnings about the increase in the number of lottery and sweepstakes scams. Each year, thousands of Americans fall prey to illegal scam operators who lure the victims into sending them money in exchange for what they believe will be a large cash prize. The unsuspecting victims, who are often elderly, receive countless phone calls — typically from foreign countries — and letters demanding cash until they relinquish their money or stop cooperating. While cases are currently being pursued by international law enforcement officials, Marylanders can avoid being scammed by recognizing and reporting this type of fraud.

“The most effective way to deter this criminal activity is to educate the citizens of Maryland about its existence,” said Maryland Lottery and Gaming Control Agency Director Stephen Martino. “The Maryland Lottery operates its games with honesty and integrity. We are placing our resources behind all efforts to expose and eliminate these unscrupulous attempts to defraud the public.”

“This is an all-too-common scam that turns the dream of winning the lottery into a nightmare,” said Attorney General Gansler. “Our office is committed to protect Marylanders from fraud and this kind of thievery once again lends credence to the old adage, ‘If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.’”

The Maryland Lottery and Gaming Control Agency and OAG offer the following tips and information to assist Marylanders in recognizing the signs of scamming:

  • Never believe a letter, phone call or email message from someone claiming to guarantee you a prize.
  • Never agree to send money to anyone claiming to be a legitimate lottery representative. The Maryland Lottery will never ask you to send money in exchange for a prize.
  • Never put up with threatening phone calls or letters of any kind.

Always keep your credit card and bank account numbers to yourself. Scam artists will often ask for them with the goal of accessing your accounts and stealing your money.

Protect yourself by learning more at the Lottery Security page and for even further information on what to do if you are a victim of a lottery scam, contact your local police department and the Attorney General’s Consumer Protection Division at 410-528-8662.

Maryland Lottery Promotes National Problem Gambling Awareness Week

2013 NPGAW

The Maryland Lottery and Gaming Control Agency (LGCA) is taking part in the 11th annual National Problem Gambling Awareness Week, which is running through March 9.   The campaign’s goal is to educate the public and healthcare professionals about the warning signs of problem gambling and to raise awareness about the help that is available, both locally and nationally. The campaign is led by the National Council on Problem Gambling (NCPG), a national advocate for programs and services to assist problem gamblers and their families.  This year’s theme is “Problem Gambling: A New Understanding of a Community Concern.”

The LGCA has taken a proactive role in addressing problem gambling issues. In late 2010, at the behest of Lottery Director Stephen Martino, the Maryland Alliance for Responsible Gambling (MARG) was formed. MARG is comprised of Maryland state agencies involved in problem gambling issues, not-for-profit organizations, Maryland legislators and the state’s casinos. MARG works to promote responsible gambling awareness and provide resources for problem gamblers as well as for their friends and families.

MARG’s website, mdgamblinghelp.org, highlights the resources available throughout the state, including a 24-hour, toll-free helpline; educational materials; a counselor search; and information about the Maryland Lottery’s Voluntary Exclusion Program (VEP). A tool of personal responsibility, the voluntary exclusion program allows problem gamblers to ban themselves from Maryland casinos.  Its success has led the LGCA to prepare a similar program, launching this spring, for the traditional lottery.  “We want to ensure that Marylanders with a gambling problem have access to the programs and support they need to deal with it responsibly and pro-actively,” Martino said. “That’s why it is important to use this week to bring awareness to the numerous resources available to create positive change in our community.”

During National Problem Gambling Awareness Week, the LGCA will be blogging on its casino website, gaming.mdlottery.com, and posting statistics and information regarding gambling on Facebook and Twitter. In addition, special messaging will be featured at the more than 4,200 Lottery retail locations across Maryland, via the agency’s Lottery In Motion™ monitor screens.

“This is an opportunity to reach out and bring further awareness to the issues of problem gambling,” Martino said. “We always encourage people to set limits and play responsibly.”

Maryland Lottery Celebrates 40th Anniversary with Exhibit at the Baltimore Museum of Industry

Maryland Lottery 40th Anniversary

“40 Years/40 Stories” details Lottery’s history

The year was 1973. Polyester pants were in fashion, disco music pulsed across the nation, and the Maryland Lottery opened its doors for the very first time. Now, 40 years later, the Maryland Lottery is celebrating its ruby anniversary with a featured exhibit, “40 Year/40 Stories,” at the Baltimore Museum of Industry (BMI). The multi-faceted exhibit, which opens to the public on March 3, will provide visitors with an in-depth look at the Maryland Lottery’s economic and social role in the state’s history and will feature historic newspaper articles, unique game components, iconic scratch-off tickets, vintage print and commercial advertising and an eclectic array of photographs and visuals that span 40 years.

“We spent almost a year doing research in preparation for the exhibit,” said Maryland Lottery Director of Communications Carole Everett. “The Maryland Lottery is a multi-dimensional organization that is far more complex than most people realize.  We believe the public will find ‘40 Years/40 Stories’ thoroughly enjoyable and interesting.”

The exhibit will be open to attendees of the BMI’s annual Bull and Oyster Roast fundraiser on Saturday, March 2, 2013. The Lottery will also announce the first set of winners from the 40 Rubies scratch-off second-chance contest and broadcast the Pick 3/Pick 4 drawing live from the museum during the event on partner station WBAL-TV at 7:57 p.m.

The Maryland Lottery is encouraging its players to share in the anniversary celebration on Twitter by sharing their favorite Lottery moments using the hashtag #mdlottery40.

“40 Years/40 Stories” was created in collaboration with independent design consultant Jeremy Hoffman.  Hoffman, a Baltimore native and MICA graduate, specializes in museum and environmental projects.  The exhibit, which is expected to run through the fall, will be open to the public during regular museum hours, which are Tuesday through Sunday from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. For more information about the BMI or the exhibit, click here.

Mt. Airy Family Claims $26 Million Mega Millions Winning Ticket

First Maryland Mega Millions jackpot win since March 2012

At approximately 10 p.m. Tuesday evening, before going to bed, a Mt. Airy man jokingly told his fiancée they were going to wake up as millionaires. One hour later, while they were sound asleep, that premonition became a reality.

When the woman woke up the next morning, she went online to check her tickets and realized they were $26 million richer. Before calling her fiancé, she had her daughter check the numbers on the ticket, too.

“I am still in denial,” said the grandmother-of-two who chose to remain anonymous. “I even drove by the store the next day to see if it was real. One look at the parking lot with all the news vans and I knew it was true.”

The lucky winner, who babysits her grandchildren, playfully told her daughter that she could no longer watch the kids — unless it was at the beach. That’s because the 48-year-old retiree plans to buy a beach house — or two. “This will be the first time anyone from our family has ever owned a home,” the winner told Lottery officials. “There have been so many winners in Western Maryland lately, we’re glad we were one of them.”

To win the jackpot, the winner matched all five numbers, plus the Mega Ball. After choosing the cash option, they will take home $12.6 million after taxes. The winning ticket was purchased at Mt. Airy Shell, located at 649 Lakeview Dr. in Mt. Airy. For selling the winning ticket, the retailer will receive a $26,000 commission. This is the first Mega Millions jackpot win in Maryland since three public education employees shared the $218.6 million portion of the record-breaking $656 million jackpot from March 2012.

Give Responsibly, Lottery Tickets Aren’t Child’s Play

Lottery and Gaming Control Agency, The National Council on Problem Gambling and McGill University combine efforts to discourage Lottery tickets as gifts for underage children

Results from recent studies show a growing number of high school students reportedly receive one or more lottery tickets or scratch cards as gifts. This, coupled with the growing concern about adolescent problem gambling, prompted the Maryland Lottery and Gaming Control Agency, the National Council on Problem Gambling, the International Center for Youth Gambling Problems and High-Risk Behaviors at McGill University along with dozens of other lottery corporations around the globe to collaborate this holiday season to increase public awareness about the impact of giving lottery products as gifts to minors.

“We know that playing the lottery at a young age is inappropriate and can increase the potential for problem gambling later in life,” said Dr. Jeffrey Derevensky, co-director of the International Centre for Youth Gambling Problems and High-Risk Behaviors at McGill University (Canada). “We welcome the collaborative efforts of Maryland Lottery and Gaming Control Agency to help make everyone aware of this issue, as together we can make a difference in preventing underage gambling and gambling problems.”

This year, the Maryland Lottery and Gaming Control Agency is encouraging players to give responsibly. When giving a lottery product as a gift, please be sure to keep the person’s age in mind.
